Valtteri Bottas stormed to a dominant victory at the Australian Grand Prix to kick-start the 2019 Formula 1 season, fronting a 1-2 finish for Mercedes.

Bottas, who started the season opener from second on the grid after being beaten to pole position by team-mate Lewis Hamilton, dominated the 58-lap affair, clearing the reigning champion into Turn 1 on the race start before leading from lights to flag.

Starting on the Soft compound tyre, Bottas used a one-stop strategy to his advantage, pitting at the end of lap 23 for a set of Medium tyres, briefly relinquishing his lead to Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

With Verstappen pitting for his sole stop of the race at the end of lap 25, Bottas reclaimed the lead, remaining unchallenged to take the chequered flag with a 21-second advantage while also securing the fastest lap of the race, taking one bonus point.

Hamilton, who was under pressure in the closing stages of the race from Verstappen, held onto second from the hard-charging Dutchman to complete a 1-2 finish for Mercedes while the Red Bull driver took third, with the RB15 becoming the first Honda-powered car to finish on a Formula 1 podium since the 2008 British Grand Prix.

For Ferrari, it was a 4-5 finish in what was a disappointing opening race of the season for the Italian marque, with Sebastian Vettel edging ahead of Charles Leclerc despite suffering from an apparent mechanical issue in the closing stages of the race.

Vettel, who started from third, failed to remain in-check with leading Mercedes pair, falling into the clutches of Verstappen, who extended his opening stint of the race while Leclerc experienced a low-key debut in red, running for much of the race in fifth position, unable to challenge the leading pack.

Kevin Magnussen fronted the second half of the field in F1's 'Class B' championship, taking sixth place for Haas while Renault's Nico Hulkenberg took seventh, fighting through the field after starting in 11th while team-mate Daniel Ricciardo failed to finish, with the Australian losing his front wing on the run down to Turn 1.

Kimi Raikkonen delivered Alfa Romeo with eighth while Lance Stroll returned to the top 10 by finishing in ninth place on his debut for Racing Point. Daniil Kvyat completed the top 10 for Toro Rosso, holding off Pierre Gasly who finished in 11th.

Joining Ricciardo in retirement was Romain Grosjean in the second Haas and McLaren's Carlos Sainz Jr, with the prior becoming the victim of a front-left tyre failure while an MGU-K issue for the latter ended the Spaniard's race on lap 11.
