MP Motorsport has recruited Simo Laaksonen to its FIA Formula 3 team for 2019.
FIA Formula 3 has replaced the GP3 Series on Formula 1’s support bull and will join the paddock at eight Grands Prix this season.
Laaksonen competed in GP3 last year and claimed a podium finish at the final round of the campaign in Abu Dhabi.
“I’m really happy to be joining MP for my first season in FIA F3”, said Laaksonen.
“They were often the surprise package in GP3 last year, and I’m sure that together we are able to spring some more surprises in 2019.
“With the new F3 cars, it’s a level playing field for everyone again, so in our pre-season build-up we will be working hard to develop a front-running car.”
MP Motorsport has not yet confirmed the identity of Laaksonen’s two team-mates.
Formula 3 testing begins at Paul Ricard later this month ahead of May’s season-opener in Barcelona.
