IndyCar eyes 2020 Surfers Paradise return

IndyCar boss Mark Miles has expressed optimism the championship can return to Surfers Paradise, potentially as early as next year.

IndyCar has not visited Australia since 2008, when a final non-championship race was held prior to the reunification of America’s single-seater championships.

Champ Car visited the street circuit between 1991 and 2008, with the track quickly establishing itself as a popular venue on the calendar.

Speaking on Wednesday about future plans for IndyCar, Miles explained that leading figures are putting in a concerted effort to take the series back to Australia.

“We're working hard on the possibility of a return to Surfers Paradise in Queensland, on the Gold Coast of Australia,” said Miles.

“If that's possible it could be done for February of 2020.

"So that's work that has intensified right now and hopefully something that might be achieved and finalised in the next couple of months.

“So there's plenty of time to properly promote a great event."

Nigel Mansell, Michael Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi and Dario Franchitti are among the drivers to have tasted victory at the Gold Coast 300 while only Sebastien Bourdais took multiple wins at the venue.

IndyCar has modified its calendar in recent years with Formula 1 venue Circuit of the Americas the highest-profile addition to the 2019 roster.

Elsewhere Phoenix has been dropped, while Laguna Seca is to return to the calendar for the first time since 2004, replacing Sonoma as the season finale.
