2018 Moto3 world champion Jorge Martin has suffered a broken ankle in a Moto2 testing crash at Jerez on Friday, and will miss the remaining two days of his debut Moto2 outing.

Martin will join the Red Bull KTM Ajo team in the intermediate class next season alongside former Moto3 champion Brad Binder.

The Spaniard dominated this year's Moto3 category, winning seven times on his way to the lightweight class crown aboard the Gresini Honda.

The first test of the 2019 Moto2 season, which will see the class switch from 600cc Honda engines to 765cc Triumph motors, got underway on Friday at Jerez and is due to run for the next two days.

Martin crashed at Turn 2 in the afternoon and suffered a fracture to his right foot as well as three broken fingers in his left hand, with the Ajo team confirming he will miss the rest of the first pre-season test.

A brief Twitter statement read: “Jorge Maring has suffered a crash on the first day of the Moto2 Jerez Test.

“He has a fracture in the right foot so he won't be able to ride the next two days.”

The opening day of official testing on the new Triumph engines was topped by Pons' Lorenzo Baldassarri, who shot to the top of the times in the final session of the day with a 1:42.203s to go 0.143s clear of Sky VR46 rider Luca Marini.

Britain's Sam Lowes completed the top three on his return to the Gresini squad he raced with in '16, Lowes a further 0.139s adrift. Augusto Fernandez [Pons] and Remy Gardner [SAG Team] rounded out the top five.

Top rookie honours went to the sister Sky VR46 bike of Nicolo Bulega, who was seventh fastest on the combined times, 0.566s off the pace.

The inaugural MotoE test sessions ran between Moto2 on Friday, with sometime SIC Racing rider Niki Tuuli leading the way for Ajo Motorsport with a best lap of 1:51.721s.
