Alex Rins set the pace in the second MotoGP practice session ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix by 0.093 seconds over Marc Marquez just a day after a fire damaged one of his Suzukis in pitlane.
After setting the early pace, Marquez re-established top spot with two minutes remaining, only for Rins to guided his Suzuki to a 1:59.608s to edge ahead of the Honda rider to top FP2.
Having opted against a time attack at the end of FP1, Marquez went out on fresh rubber at the start of the afternoon session and set the early pace with a 2:00.897s.
The Honda rider further improved to a 2:00.527s, with Maverick Vinales 0.079s adrift in second, though both were still almost a second down on Dovizioso's laptime from FP1.
Marquez's benchmark remained intact until the final 20 minutes, when Valentino Rossi edged ahead of Dovizioso, who had juts clocked a 2:00.3398s, with a 2:00.035s.
Just as he did in FP1, Pramac's Jack Miller was the first to dip into the 1:59s bracket, the Australian posting a 1:59.771s with four minutes remaining to go two tenths clear of the field.
Miller's time at the top was brief, however, as Marquez edged ahead by seven hundredths to reclaim first.
Rins, who had one of his GSX-RRs damaged when it burst into flames duringa routine warm-up in the pits on Thursday, began to light up the timing screens just as Marquez usurped Miller, and held the lap together to set a weekend-best of 1:59.608s.
This remained unchallenged at the chequered flag, with Rins maintaining a 0.093s advantage over new five-time world champion Marquez, while Miller completed the top three a further 0.070s behind.
Phillip Island winner Vinales completed the top four on the first of the Yamahas ahead of Pramac's Danilo Petrucci and Rossi, with Dovizioso shuffled back to seventh late on.
Johann Zarco was eighth on his two-year-old Tech3 M1, with Andrea Iannone [Suzuki] and Dani Pedrosa [Honda] rounding out the top 10 – though the latter could face Q1 should FP3 be wet, as was 11th on the combined times.
19th-placed Aleix Espargaro is the last of the provisional Q2 entrants by virtue of the Aprilia rider's FP1 time. Espargaro's teammate Scott Redding was the only crasher in FP2, the Briton coming off unharmed at Turn 2.
Jorge Lorenzo did take part in the afternoon session, but only completed nine laps spread over very short runs, and was unable to advance on last with a 2:04.636s – five seconds off the pace of Rins.
