Robert Kubica says he is not willing to wait until after the Formula 1 season has finished in order to finalise his 2019 plans.
Kubica began targeting a return to Formula 1 in mid-2017, six years after sustaining severe arm injuries in a rally crash, and undertook test runs with Renault and Williams.
Kubica was overlooked in favour of Sergey Sirotkin but remained affiliated with Williams through a test and reserve driver role, which has led to a handful of test and FP1 outings in the FW41.
Williams has already signed Mercedes-backed Formula 2 title leader George Russell while incumbent Lance Stroll is poised to switch to the Force India team owned by his father, leaving a vacancy at the team.
Kubica is understood to be in contention for the drive, along with current racer Sirotkin and likely Force India outcast Esteban Ocon.
“Time is running, I don’t want to wait like last year, hopefully we will get a decision earlier than it was [in 2017/18],” Kubica told Sky Sports.
“The target will be to be on the grid next year but as I said I cannot wait until December.
“The team is evaluating different scenarios as they are right to do and I am doing all on my side if there will be a common agreement or not but I focus on seeing also other opportunities.
“I don’t want to find out myself in December or whenever it will be, it’s too late, and having nothing.”
Kubica added that he hopes “in the next couple of weeks everything should be decided” and that “the aim is to be on the grid in F1”.
