Jorge Lorenzo has been taken to hospital in Buriram following a massive highside crash during MotoGP FP2 in Thailand, but is thought to have escaped any serious injuries.
The Spaniard came into the Thailand weekend nursing a foot injury, after suffering a dislocated toes and compound fracture of the fifth metacarpal in his right foot in a highside in the opening lap of the Aragon Grand Prix.
Declared fit to ride at Buriram on Thursday, Lorenzo crashed at Turn 3 in the latter stages of FP2 when the rear of his Ducati came round on him as a result of a suspected mechanical issue, launching him into the air while his bike destroyed itself as it barrel rolled.
Lorenzo was conscious after the crash, but had to be stretchered off circuit and was take to the medical centre for checks, while the session was briefly red-flagged to clean up debris and fluid from the accident.
Scans at the circuit revealed no fractures to his foot, and was declared fit by MotoGP doctors to continue riding on Saturday, though will have to undergo a further check prior to FP3.
Ducati confirmed via its Twitter feed Lorenzo sustained “strong bruising” to his left wrist and right ankle, and has been transferred to a local hospital for another scan.
“After a big crash during FP2, Lorenzo had an X-ray at [the] medical centre of the Chang Circuit,” the tweet read.
“He has strong bruising on his left wrist and right ankle, but no fractures. Going to Buriram hospital for a final scan.”
Lorenzo ended FP1 17th on the timesheets, 1.3 seconds off the pace of Yamaha's Maverick Vinales, and was only a second adrift of teammate Andrea Dovizioso in FP2 in 16th despite his crash.
The Ducati rider's crash at Aragon, as well as his late tumble two weeks prior at Misano, have left him fourth in the standings and 54 points from Dovizioso in runner-up spot ahead of this weekend's inaugural Thailand race.
