Alessio Lorandi and Niko Kari handed penalties for Abu Dhabi Formula 2 finale

Following Sunday's Formula 2 Sprint Race at the Sochi Autodrom, Alessio Lorandi and series debutant Niko Kari have both been handed penalties for the final round of the 2018 season in Abu Dhabi.

Lorandi, who joined the Formula 2 grid with the Italian Trident squad mid-season to replace Santino Ferrucci, started Sunday's Sprint Race in second on the grid, however, failed to complete the first lap after colliding with DAMS' Nicholas Latifi in Turn 4.

As a result of the accident which saw Lorandi miss his braking point and strike Latifi's left-rear, the Italian driver has been handed a five-place grid demotion for the Feature Race at the Yas Marina Circuit on November 24.

Despite failing to see the chequered flag in Sochi after crashing under changeable conditions, Kari also received a three-place grid penalty for Formula 2's penultimate race of the season after exceeding track limits on the opening lap of the race in Sochi, gaining an unfair advantage as a result.

With one weekend of racing in Formula 2 remaining, ART Grand Prix's George Russell continues to lead the Drivers' Championship, holding a 37 point advantage over Alexander Albon who is now his nearest rival.

Trailing Russell by 51 points is 2019 McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris who retired in the Sochi sprint as a result of picking up a puncture when racing against Arjun Maini.

A post-race investigation into the incident that ended Norris' hopes of clinching the Formula 2 title found that Maini was responsible for the incident and the driver was handed a 10s time penalty. The driver still finished in 15th after the application of the punishment.

The 2018 Formula 2 season will come to a close on November 24 and 25.
