Main Russian Grand Prix DRS zone extended

The main Drag Reduction System zone at the Sochi Autodrom has been extended for this weekend’s Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix.

The sport has been experimenting with its DRS zones this season, including introducing three areas, as opposed to the customary two, at a handful of Grands Prix.

Last year’s Russian Grand Prix featured little in the way of action, with just one reported overtaking on-track after the opening lap.

The section along the main straight has been lengthened, meaning that the activation point is now 95 metres before the right-hand kink at Turn 1.

Previously the activation point was on the apex of that turn, which leads into the lengthy full-throttle section before the first braking zone of the lap at Turn 2.

As a consequence, the detection point has been shifted back to 72 metres after the exit of Turn 18, which also doubles up as the finish line.

The other DRS zone has not been altered, with its detection point 72 metres before Turn 10 and its activation point 203 metres after the exit of the medium-speed right-hander.
