Mick Schumacher opens 49-point F3 title advantage but win run ends

Mick Schumacher will take a 49-point advantage into next month's final round of the European Formula 3 Championship, though had his winning streak ended by Robert Shwartzman.

Schumacher claimed his fourth win on the bounce on Saturday to prise away the points lead from Red Bull protégé Daniel Ticktum, and bagged pole position for Races 2 and 3.

Schumacher controlled the second race to notch up another triumph, as Marcus Armstrong prevailed over fellow Ferrari protégé Shwartzman in the battle for second, as Prema claimed a 1-2-3.

Shwartzman was able to hit back in the final race as he jumped Schumacher at the start and the pair retained their positions throughout a tame encounter.

Shwartzman’s maiden victory ended Schumacher’s five-race string of wins but the German youngster extended his title advantage over Ticktum from 18 to 49 points.

Ticktum crashed out of the second race while scrapping over seventh place with Renault protégé Sacha Fenestraz and Force India affiliated Jehan Daruvala, the trio coming to blows in dramatic fashion on the run between Turns 3 and 4.

Ticktum limited the damage in the final race as he rose from seventh on the grid to classify fourth, narrowly behind Jonathan Aberdein, but must still heavily out-score Schumacher in order to take the title.

Schumacher’s Prema team-mate Armstrong remains a mathematical title contender, though must overcome a 69-point deficit, with 75 up for grabs in next month’s Hockenheim finale.
