Honda junior Tadasuke Makino stormed to a dominant victory at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, fronting a 1-2 finish for Russian Time with team-mate Artem Markelov finishing in second place.
While championship leader George Russell claimed pole position for the feature race, Makino only set the 14th fastest time in qualifying, meaning that he started the 30-lap affair from the seventh row of the grid.
As one of three drivers to start the race on the medium compound tyre, Makino put in an impressive driving performance during his first stint which lasted for 28 laps.
While the battle at the front of the pack raged on with Markelov and Alexander Albon swapping positions for the lead lap after lap, Makino made his way through the field virtually unnoticed, moving into the podium positions after overtaking Russell early on.
Clearing Russell, the only way was upwards for Makino who cleared both Albon and Markelov in the space of one lap to take the lead.
With a clear advantage over the rest of the field by running on the medium tyre, Makino pulled away from his Russian team-mate who continued to lap in second place after the melee.
At the end of lap 6, the pit window opened and Markelov swiftly led the field into the pits, with the majority of drivers swapping their supersoft rubber for a set of more durable mediums as early as possible.
With the MP Motorsport pair of Ralph Boschung and Dorian Boccolacci also starting on the medium tyre, the pair moved into the podium positions, lapping in second and third place, holding a large margin over Markelov who rejoined in fourth.
Continuing to lap the 5.793km-long circuit with consistent pace, Makino pitted on lap 28, rejoining in the lead, three seconds ahead of his team-mate now on a fresh set of supersofts.
Taking the chequered flag on lap 30, Makino secured his first Formula 2 victory while Markelov finished in second place, securing Russian Time's first 1-2 finish since Spa 2017. Albon stood on the final step of the podium for DAMS.
For Mercedes junior Russell, a podium at Monza was not on the cards, with the Briton finishing in fourth place. Locked in a race-long battle with his title rival Lando Norris, the Briton successfully extended his lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship, with Carlin's Norris finishing in sixth.
Nicholas Latifi split the pair in fifth place in the second DAMS machine.
After starting from the pit lane instead of second on the grid, Sergio Sette Camara took seventh place while Antonio Fuoco secured eighth for Charouz Racing System – a result that hands the Italian driver pole position for Sunday's sprint race.
MP Motorsport's Ralph Boschung secured ninth place and was followed by Nyck de Vries who completed the top 10 for Prema Racing.
