MotoGP has taken the decision to cancel the British Grand Prix at Silverstone due to poor weather and standing water on the track surface.
Dorna took the decision to reschedule the race to 11:30 local time instead of 13:00 in the hope of missing the worst of the rain, but it became apparent that a morning downpour had made the conditions unsafe, something that was confirmed by riders during their sighting laps when the pitlane was initially opened at 11:10.
The decision was taken to delay the race with hourly updates on the condition of the track. However after four hours, officials met with Dorna, IRTA and team officials to declare the cancellation of the event.
A proposal to run the race on Monday – a bank holiday in the UK – gained support, but was later ruled out as it became apparent that there wouldn't be a sufficient number of marshals available.
Both Moto2 and Moto3 have also been cancelled.
It's the first time a MotoGP race has been cancelled outright since the 1980 Austrian GP, which was also marred by poor weather.
