Robert Wickens has sustained multiple injuries in a horrific crash at Pocono Raceway during the early laps of Sunday's ABC Supply 500.
Wickens touched with Ryan Hunter-Reay from the inside of Turn 2, pitching the American's #28 Andretti Autosport DHL car around and Wickens was lifted onto the SAFER barrier which led to him sliding into the catch fencing, destroying his #6 SPM machine.
The Canadian driver has broken both legs, right arm and has further injuries to his spine as well as bruising a lung. IndyCar communications chief Curt Cavin confirmed that Wickens was "awake and alert" when brought to the medical centre where he was then transported to the nearby Lehigh Valley hospital by helicopter.
The incident led to the race being delayed for nearly two hours to repair the heavy damage to the catch fencing around the outside of the circuit.
A joint statement from IndyCar and SPM read: "Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver Robert Wickens is being treated for injuries to his lower extremities, right arm and spine following an incident in the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway. He also sustained a pulmonary contusion.
"He will undergo an MRI and probable surgery at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest. Further updates on his condition will be provided when available."
