Francesco Bagnaia topped a rain-hit Friday for the Moto2 Austrian Grand Prix, while Steven Odendaal led an NTS one-two in a wet FP2.
Friday's running began in clear, dry conditions at the Red Bull Ring, with Francesco Bagnaia leading the timesheets at the end of FP1 with a 1:30.441s.
With the threat of rain present for the afternoon session, laptimes tumbled dramatically over the course of FP1, with CGBM Evolution KTM's Iker Lecuona setting the early pace with a 1:31.970s.
New championship leader Miguel Oliveira led the session moments later with a 1:31.211s, though this was quickly usurped by Mattia Pasini, who headed into the close quarter of the session as the rider to beat with a 1:30.688s.
Catalunya race winner Fabio Quartararo was the first rider to dethrone Pasini, the Speed Up rider edging ahead by 0.080s with 11 minutes remaining.
Bagnaia took over from Quartararo three minutes later with a 1:30.441s, and this remained as the benchmark through to the chequered flag, with Lorenzo Baldassarri guiding his Pons machine into second behind the Sky VR46 rider.
Marcel Schrotter leaped up to third in the closing stages ahead of Marquez and Quartararo, while Pasini dropped to 10th following a late crash at Turn 6.
FP2 proved a soaked affair, with the rain intensifying several times throughout the session. Joe Roberts guided his NTS machine to top spot with a 1:43.577s 10 minutes in, which stood as the benchmark for much of the session.
Teammate Odendaal put this under threat on his final lap at the end of the session, and eclipsed his time by 0.233 seconds with a 1:43.344s to end a session for NTS fastest for the first time this season.
Brno podium finisher Luca Marini completed the top three on his Sky VR46 Kalez, with Tech3's Remy Gardner fourth despite stopping on track with a later mechanical issue.
Wet weather specialist Khairul Idham Pawi was fifth fastest, while Honda Asia teammate Tetsuta Nagashima was ninth despite crash at Rindt corner at the end of the session.
Between the Team Asia pair came Intact GP's Xavi Vierge, Quartararo and Andrea Locatelli on the Italtrans bike, while overall fastest man Bagnaia rounded out the top 10.
The wet conditions caught out a number of riders, with Sam Lowes falling at Rindt late on, while Joan Mir crashed at the first corner. 12th and 13th in FP2, the pair ended the day eighth and 15th overall
