Formula 1 geared up for in-season Hungary test

Formula 1 teams are eager for their summer break – but that has to wait for another few days with the sport having stayed on at the Hungaroring for in-season testing.

Formula 1 holds two two-day in-season test sessions for teams and running will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, a repeat of the post-race Spanish Grand Prix gathering.

As per Formula 1 regulations, two of the four test days have to be allocated to drivers with two or fewer Grand Prix starts under their belt.

As it did in 2017, Mercedes has allocated both days of running to Formula 2 title leader George Russell, as the Briton emerges as a contender for a 2019 Williams seat.

Ferrari reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi will be in action in the SF71-H on Tuesday before jumping into Sauber’s C37 on Wednesday; regulars Kimi Raikkonen and Marcus Ericsson will also run.

Red Bull simulator driver Jake Dennis will have his second go in the RB14 in the wake of the team’s request to field Daniel Ticktum being denied due to a lack of Super License points, with Daniel Ricciardo kicking off proceedings on Tuesday.

Force India is to hand more track time to Formula 2 racer Nicholas Latifi and GP3 title contender Nikita Mazepin, while Robert Kubica and Oliver Rowland are to drive for Williams.

Formula 2 veteran Artem Markelov will have his first taste of current-spec Formula 1 machinery in his role as a Renault test and development driver, with Nico Hulkenberg also on duty.

Sean Gelael will return to Toro Rosso for a day in the STR13, while F2 title challenger Lando Norris will get behind the wheel of McLaren’s MCL33.

Toro Rosso will also have a second car running for the purpose of carrying out tyre testing in association with Pirelli.

Only nine teams will be in action after Haas opted to sit out the test, feeling its time is better spent poring over data gathered from a run of five events in six weeks.

The sessions are set to run from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00, with hot conditions anticipated, and a likelihood of rain to affect Tuesday’s afternoon session.
