Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo is set to start from the back of the grid at the German Grand Prix, after taking on new engine components.
Reliability issues earlier in the season left Ricciardo braced for a sanction and he expected to take on a sizeable grid demotion at Hockenheim.
On Friday morning an updated list of power unit components issued by the FIA confirmed that Ricciardo’s RB14 has been fitted with a third MGU-K, Energy Store and Control Electronics.
Under old regulations, this would result in a nominal 20-place grid drop, but under new-for-2018 rules it simply means Ricciardo will drop to the back.
Red Bull has taken the penalty this weekend in order to maximise prospects at the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, with the Hungaroring track better suited to the RB14.
