Miami Grand Prix vote postponed to September

A decision over plans to bring Formula 1 to Miami has been put back by several weeks in order to allow more input from local residents.

Formula 1 has been negotiating with the City of Miami to bring the sport to the city from October 2019, with a street race planned for the Bayfront Park and Port Miami district.

City Commissioners were set to meet on July 26 in order to discuss, and vote on, the next stage of the process, but this has now been put back.

“Last night we had a big vote on a proposed MLS [Major League Soccer] stadium,” a spokesperson for the City of Miami told Motorsport Week.

“We want to make sure we do this right and F1 gets the full attention it deserves.

“As such, it will be brought to the City Commission at a later date. We are currently targeting September [for the meeting], but there is no hard date.”

City officials are currently negotiating a 10-year deal, with an option for a further 10 years, with Formula 1.

A Fan Fest is also planned for this October as part of the build-up to the proposed event.

Local residents have already voiced concerns about the disruption a Miami Grand Prix could bring to the city, citing months of construction, street closure and noise pollution as major grievances.

Liberty Media has identified the United States as a primary market to tap into, and the proposed street race in Miami would be in addition to the United States Grand Prix that has been held in Austin, Texas since 2012.
