For the second consecutive race week, an LMP2 piloted by Colin Braun will lead the field to green with a record time. CORE autosport claims another pole with a time of 1:06.315 for Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Having proved fastest in all practice sessions throughout the weekend, Braun continues to show the competition level of the LMP2 teams in a time where DPi has ruled the series.
“This track really suits the LMP2 car,” “We knew Watkins Glen and [CTMP] were going to be very similar and good tracks for us. We kind of circled those at the start of the year.”
Braun’s time bested Dane Cameron’s Team Penske Acura DPi, while the top three was rounded out by the LMP2 of Robert Alon in the JDC-Miller Motorsports #85.
While the JDC-Miller team is hot off of a victory in Watkins Glen, their race-winning second car dropped back in P10 after running off track during the session. The team finished second at CTMP in 2017, and are looking to prove they can continue to compete at the highest level of the series.
Wayne Taylor Racing continues to try and return to their winning ways, with Renger van der Zande putting the Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi P4 for Sunday’s race. Helio Castroneves’ Acura DPi will start P6 after a weekend where promising pace turned to disaster with nagging mechanical issues and a speeding penalty on pit road.
The #5 Mustang Sampling Racing Cadillac DPi continues to struggle since the injury of Joao Barbosa. Christian Fittipaldi put the car on P11 as Action Express Racing teammates in the #31 sat just behind in P12. Filipe Albuquerque has managed to grasp onto his points lead, but currently only leads the championship standings by one point.
