Max Verstappen has accepted he “just lost it” after he crashed out of the second practice session for the British Grand Prix during the opening stages.
Verstappen was running the Hard tyre – the first time the blue-banded compound has been brought to a race weekend – in the second session when he spun exiting Luffield.
Verstappen skated through the gravel before impacting the wall with the right-rear of the RB14, bringing his session to a premature conclusion, having been on only his second lap.
“I think I wanted to be too quick on the Hard tyre so I just lost it,” said Verstappen.
“Unfortunately the way you hit the wall it just rips off the entire rear, but in the end of the day it’s not ideal to lose the second session.
“But the feeling I had before was actually quite good so I think balance wise we’re not too far off, we’re losing a lot of lap time on the straight.
Team-mate Daniel Ricciardo placed fifth, behind the Ferrari and Mercedes drivers, with his best lap eight-tenths of a second adrift of pacesetter Sebastian Vettel.
“We are a bit off the pace at the moment,” he said.
“Ferrari and Mercedes are strong. I hope for better tomorrow but I wouldn’t expect too much for qualifying.
“For us we will try to focus on the race. If we are going to qualify on the third row then we need to try understand how to make the tyres go longer and then we can have a chance on Sunday.”
Red Bull has been the in-form team across the past five Grands Prix, taking more points than opponents Ferrari and Mercedes.
