Formula E has announced that it will return to mainland China in Season Five with a race in Sanya which will make up the sixth round of the 2018/19 calendar.
The all-electric championship last raced in China in Season Two where Beijing was the background while the series' maiden race was held on the grounds of the Olympic park in 2014.
Sanya, which is a popular tourist destination situated in Hainan, will see Formula E race alongside the shores of the South China Sea while the Haitang Bay will the backdrop for the event. Further details of the circuit's layout will be revealed at a later date.
“Bringing the ABB FIA Formula E Championship back to Mainland China is an important step in a key territory for the series and a market that’s instrumental to the continued development and uptake of electric vehicles globally," said Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Formula E.
"Sanya is an idyllic setting for a Formula E race – not just with the stunning views on the shores of the South China Sea – but for the ongoing efforts of Hainan in the field of electric mobility, which has led to Sanya boasting the best air quality of any city in China.”
The scheduled Sanya E-Prix is currently awaiting approval from the FIA's World Motor Sport Council, but if approved, will mark a second race in China in Season Five with the Hong Kong E-Prix set to take place on March 10.
The scheduled race in Sanya will take place on March 23.
