Christian Horner hails Max Verstappen’s ability to avoid blisters in Austrian GP

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has hailed Max Verstappen's ability to handle the blistering problem which other drivers suffered during the Austrian Grand Prix.

As his rivals fell by the wayside with the problem or via mechanical problems, the Dutchman was free to manage his own race at the head of the field and kept his tyres in check to take his fourth F1 victory, the first for Red Bull at their home circuit.

"Max did a very mature job in managing the tires, particularly through Turns 8 and 9, the last two, the fast-right handers.

"It was all about keeping the slip, the temperatures under control, particularly the left rear.

"We could see the start of blisters just starting to happen. But he was able to manage that. He was very much in control. He was getting the information from the pit wall, he was using the tools he had available to him.

"It was a really very mature drive from him to make sure he had just enough left in the last five, 10 laps because Ferrari were probably better than us on tyre deg.

"We knew that they would come back on us at the end of the race. But he had enough in the tank to see off the challenge at the end of the race.

"So phenomenal for us to win in a Red Bull car at the Red Bull Ring, be given the trophy by an ex-Red Bull driver. It has been a Red Bull day around."

Horner also heaped praise on Verstappen's early charge in the opening lap where he passed the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen into Turn 7 which involved slight contact between the two drivers, a move which ultimately led to the race victory.

"Max had a great first lap," he added.

"His move on Kimi, got pushed on the grass after Turn 2, on the run down to Turn 7, really brave move around the outside of 8.

"A very slight touch between the two of them, but nothing more like up at Turn 2 than hard racing."
