Robert Kubica still targeting full-time F1 return in 2019

Robert Kubica insists he is still targeting a full-time Formula 1 return, but admitted his options remain limited.

The Polish driver looked set to make a comeback for 2018 after testing for both Renault and Williams, however the former plumped for Carlos Sainz Jr., whilst Williams chose Sergey Sirotkin as Lance Stroll's team-mate.

Kubica meanwhile took up a reserve and development role with the British team and has taken part in two free practice sessions so far in Spain and this weekend in Austria, with a third scheduled for Abu Dhabi at the end of the season.

Speaking after taking part in FP1 on Friday, in which he finished slowest, Kubica made it clear that he is still seeking a full-time race seat in the premier series.

"My status and my position doesn’t change honestly since the end of last year," he said. "Of course, now there will be a lot of talks – although I’m staying away from them.

"It looks like in November, December [last year] I was the hot topic, which is normal. Now the top guys they have to first find the seats, so fortunately you have other topics to write than about me.

"I’m trying…of course my target will be to race next year but this hasn’t changed since, as I said, the end of last year. So we will see."

Although Kubica is aware that many seats are currently available with several drivers yet to sign new deals for 2019, he knows realistically only a handful would be viable options for him, including but not limited to Williams.

"For sure, the situation is different. November last year, there was only one seat free, which was Williams. Now there’s more seats, more teams that might change the drivers or not, so it’s not that because we are sitting here I am just targeting to be on the grid with Williams.

"My target is to be on the grid and we will see. Realistically speaking, there are not many teams I can end up with or talk with. There is no magic."

Kubica will conduct tyre testing duties for Williams at a post-race test at Silverstone, and will also be in action at the official in-season test at Budapest.
