Max Verstappen misses Monaco qualifying after FP3 crash

Red Bull's Max Verstappen failed to contest qualifying after his RB14 was unable to be repaired in time off the back of his practice crash in Monaco.

Verstappen had led the way during third practice on Saturday afternoon but crashed his Red Bull RB14 in the second part of the Swimming Pool chicane, clipping the inside barrier of Turn 15 to break the steering arm on his front-right before clattering the outside wall of Turn 16.

The accident, in which Verstappen picked up extensive damage on the right-hand side of his car, left Red Bull with a sizeable repair job before qualifying.

While the Milton Keynes-based team was forced to carry out repairs on all four corners of the car, it was initially believed that there was no internal damage on the Red Bull, although Verstappen's gearbox was later changed due to the damage, handing the Dutchman a five-place grid penalty.

That sanction was ultimately irrelevant when Verstappen did not appear during Q1, meaning he is set to start Sunday's race from the rear of the 20-car grid.

Team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who demoted Verstappen in the closing stages of FP3 to complete a practice lockout, comfortably headed Q1.
