Pietro Fittipaldi has sustained suspected multiple fractures to both legs as a result of a heavy crash during qualifying for the World Endurance Championship season-opener in Belgium.
Fittipaldi was contesting his rookie weekend with the DragonSpeed LMP1 squad at Spa-Francorchamps but his BR1 left the circuit through Eau Rouge and slammed into the barriers at pace.
The session was red-flagged and circuit activity suspended while the medical team worked on Fittipaldi, and he was taken by ambulance to Liege hospital.
A statement from the FIA added that Fittipaldi remained conscious throughout and his condition is not life threatening.
The Brazilian youngster won last year’s final Formula V8 3.5 championship and tested Formula 2 machinery before reaching part-time deals in both IndyCar and Super Formula.
Fittipaldi was scheduled to participate in next weekend’s Grand Prix of Indianapolis with Dale Coyne Racing.
He was also set to make his Indianapolis 500 debut later this month.
