Alex Marquez headed Lorenzo Baldassarri on the combined Moto2 timesheets on the opening day of practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Championship leader Francesco Bagnaia topped the opening session of the day, the Sky VR46 rider edging two tenths clear of the field with a 1:42.836s in the closing minutes of FP1.

The double race winner in 2018 was trailed by CGBM Evolution KTM's Sam Lowes, a 1:43.019s set with 15 minutes remaining initially putting him top of the standings. Romano Fenati leaped up to third on his final lap, with Alex Marquez and Miguel Oliveira completing the top five.

Bagnaia's teammate Luca Marini set the benchmark at the start of FP2, though Bagnaia quickly beat his fellow Italian's 1:43.434s with a 1:43.290s.

Marini's session came to a brief halt when he crashed at the fast Turn 4 just moments later, but he was able to walk away unscathed and eventually returned to the action to finish up 14th.

With 25 minutes remaining, Baldassarri guided his Pons Kalex to a 1:43.048s to take over at the top of the timesheets.

The Italian's time at the top last only a few minutes, however, as last year's Jerez poleman Marquez went almost three tenths clear with a 1:42.537s.

The Marc VDS rider went unchallenged to the chequered flag, with Baldassarri remaining secure in second, while Bagnaia held onto third by virtue of his FP1 time.

Lowes languished outside of the top 15 for much of FP2, but jumped up to third in the session at the end, moving him into fourth on the combined times ahead of Romano Fenati.

Red Bull KTM Ajo's Brad Binder was sixth quickest ahead of Joan Mir, while Mattia Pasini, Binder's teammate Miguel Oliveira and the second CGBM bike of Iker Lecuona completed the top 10.

Pasini suffered a mechanical issue right at the end of FP2 on his Italtrans machine, while Jorge Navarro – who was 11th fastest overall – crashed in the opening stages at Turn 2.
