Toto Wolff: Hamilton’s win makes up for Melbourne

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff feels Lewis Hamilton's victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix makes up for the events that lost them the race win in the opening event in Australia.

After another difficult weekend for Hamilton where outright pace appeared to be at a premium, the reigning world champion managed to clinch the race win after team-mate Valtteri Bottas suffered a punctured tyre with just two laps to go.

"That was just a brutal race and probably exactly the kind of Grand Prix that fans want to see, with twists and turns at every point. said Wolff.

"In the garage, it was a real rollercoaster of emotions for the whole team and I am really pleased to see us get our first win of the season with Lewis but equally incredibly disappointed for Valtteri who drove a perfect race.

"We went from looking like scoring a solid double podium, to suddenly having the possibility of a one-two before it was snatched away from us with Valtteri's puncture.

"For Lewis, I guess that his luck has come full circle after the misfortune earlier in the season, and it's probably fair to look at today as him getting back the win he lost in Melbourne."

The race result has left the Austrian with mixed emotions over the lost potential of a one-two finish in Baku, especially with the work he feels the W09 still needs to remain competitive in what he feels will be a close title battle despite only completing four out of the 21 races.

"Clearly that perfect result wasn't meant to be in such an unpredictable race, so it's a bittersweet feeling," added Wolff.

"It's fantastic to get the win on the board and to be leading the drivers' championship, but also disappointed because the quickest guy DNF'd with a puncture – and because we know there is still work ahead of us to improve the pace of the car in what will be a close three-way fight for the rest of the season."

Mercedes relinquished the lead of the Constructors' Championship to Ferrari, with the Italian marque four points clear.
