Stewards clear Sergio Perez, keeps third place

Force India's Sergio Perez has been allowed to keep his third-place finish, having cleared by the Stewards of improper use of DRS during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The Mexican's first podium in two years had been in doubt in the immediate aftermath of the race after it was reported to the stewards the Force India driver had used the Drag Reduction System outside of the permitted areas.

Throughout the race, the teams ended up in a situation where they had to tell their drivers via the radio if they were within a second of the car in front in order to open their rear wings.

This caused the stewards a problem when it came to understanding whether drivers had been using it within the regulations.

"In this case, the DRS light came on and as this was the first time the driver had experienced a default operation for the DRS," read a report.

"There was some misunderstanding of the procedure and the driver incorrectly activated the system manually.

"The system however, was only activated twice, each time for a short distance before the driver and team recognised the error.

"The Stewards are satisfied that no car was overtaken through this incorrect use."

The race stewards also had to investigate Williams' Lance Stroll and the Haas of Kevin Magnussen to see if there was any improper use of the system and the Stewards have also cleared both drivers, allowing Stroll to maintain his eighth-place finish and Magnussen 13th.
