IndyCar has been forced to abandon the race at Barber Motorsports Park until Monday after continuous heavy rain fell across the Alabama circuit.
The remaining laps of the Grand Prix of Alabama will take place on Monday to try and find a winner, with 67 laps or 75 minutes left to run, after the race was stopped on lap 23 of 90.
As the officials got the race underway for the first time, Josef Newgarden led the field away and quickly gained a lead over Penske team-mate Will Power who was trying to chase him down in the early stages.
Marco Andretti spun his #98 car at Museum corner in the horrendous conditions and quickly fell down the field as he tried to get back onto the circuit, nearly hitting the inside barrier in the process.
The race witnessed its first caution on lap 10 after Charlie Kimball came to stop after Turn 4 when the anti-stall kicked in, having been hit by Ed Jones at the penultimate corner; race control decided to take no further action on the incident.
Despite being under caution for just five laps, the track conditions steadily grew worse as heavier rain moved in.
On lap 17 the race was restarted and leader Newgarden nearly lost control of his car on standing water but kept going, though Power was less fortunate.
Power lost control of his Penske and was nearly collected by Ryan-Hunter Reay as he spun and hit the inside wall on the main straight, bringing out another caution, and causing terminal damage to his car.
Race officials then dropped the red flag and left the drivers in the pits for 37 minutes before sending them out again behind the safety car, where it was deemed that conditions were not suitable, and the red flag was called again.
Officials deliberated for some time on the plan of action and eventually opted to abandon racing for Sunday, instead re-scheduling the remainder of the race for 11am local (5pm GMT) on Monday.
The race will resume with the grid lined up as the red flag was called on Sunday, meaning Newgarden will lead the field away on Monday with the #18 Dale Coyne-Vasser Sullivan car of Sebastien Bourdais alongside him.
