Antonio Giovinazzi and Daniil Kvyat to commence Pirelli’s in-season F1 test programme

Antonio Giovinazzi and Daniil Kvyat will share driving duties for Ferrari as Pirelli’s in-season tyre development programme begins at Fiorano this week.

Under current regulations, sole tyre supplier Pirelli is permitted up to 25 days of running per season in order to hone its products for future campaigns.

The running is split between all 10 current teams, who supply current-year cars, with action taking place at various venues across the year.

As per 2017, Pirelli is in charge of the run plan, while teams are prohibited from running any updated parts, in order to ensure no unfair advantage is gained.

Data gathered during the test is shared between all teams.

This week’s two-day action is the first of nine scheduled tests this year, with Giovinazzi and Kvyat set to run Wet tyres at an artificially watered Fiorano circuit.

Giovinazzi is slated to drive on Thursday, before Kvyat takes over running on Friday.

Giovinazzi has acted as Ferrari’s reserve driver since the start of 2017, and participated in two Grands Prix for Sauber last year, with further FP1 runs with the Swiss minnows planned this season.

Kvyat started 72 races for Toro Rosso and Red Bull from 2014-17, taking two podiums, but was dropped by the energy drink company last October.

The Russian was recruited as a development driver for Ferrari in January.

Pirelli's 2018 tyre testing schedule:

Circuit Date Slick/Wet Team(s)
Fiorano April 19-20 Wet Ferrari
Barcelona May 15-16 Slick McLaren/Haas
Paul Ricard May 30-31 Wet Mercedes
Vallelunga June 14-15 Slick Toro Rosso
Silverstone July 10-11 Slick Red Bull/Williams
Paul Ricard September 6-5 Wet McLaren
Paul Ricard September 20-21 Slick Mercedes/Ferrari
Suzuka October 9-10 Slick Renault
Mexico October 30 Slick Sauber

NB: The provisional post-China test involving Force India has been postponed and yet to be re-arranged.
