Max Verstappen's father, Jos, says his son needs to "think more" following his clash with Sebastian Vettel in China at the weekend and that he was "disappointed" by the failed move.
Verstappen attempted to pass Vettel at the Turn 14 hairpin for second place but locked-up and ended up sliding into the side of the Ferrari. The incident dropped the pair down the order, whilst the stewards handed the Red Bull driver a ten-second time penalty.
Speaking to Ziggo Sport's Peptalk show, Jos Verstappen described the move as an "error of judgement" that required more thought.
"The overtake on Vettel really wasn’t on. It wasn’t possible. It was an error of judgement," he said.
"In some circumstances Max just has to think more. I don’t want him to change his driving style. He passed two people at the start. He did that perfectly. That’s what we all want to see.
“But we don’t want to see these kinds of actions. He needs to have it under control. He needs to think."
Verstappen was also involved in a second incident in as many races when he and Lewis Hamilton clashed in Bahrain. Verstappen Snr defended his son in that instance, calling it a "racing incident".
"I don’t think there was anything wrong with that, I still think it was a good move," he added. “Afterwards you could say Max should have given Hamilton more room, but Hamilton could have done the same to Max. That’s why it’s a racing incident and they’re both taking the blame."
