Inaugural Formula E champion Nelson Piquet Jr set the pace in first practice ahead of this weekend's Rome ePrix for Jaguar Racing.
In the 45 minute-long session, Piquet set a best time of a 1:36.134, beating Sam Bird to the fastest time of the session by a mere 0.081 seconds with the DS Virgin Racing driver finishing in second.
Mitch Evans completed the top three in the second Jaguar, 0.542 seconds adrift of his team-mate while championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne was fourth fastest for Techeetah, 0.002 seconds down on New Zealand's Evans.
Season Two champion Sebastien Buemi was the highest placed Renault e.dams driver in fifth fastest and was followed by Andre Lotterer who was sixth fastest in the second black and gold Techeetah entry.
Felix Rosenqvist was seventh fastest, 0.997 seconds off the pace for Mahindra Racing while Dragon Racing's Jerome d'Ambrosio was eighth, reigning champion Lucas di Grassi was ninth for Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler and Alex Lynn completed the top ten, bringing out the red flag in the closing stages of the session after crashing his DS Virgin car in the Piazza JFK section of the Circuito Cittadino Dell’EUR track.
Outside of the top ten, Jose Maria Lopez was 11th fastest in the second Dragon car after making brief contact with the barriers while Oliver Turvey was the highest placed NIO car in 12th, with home favourite Luca Filippi ending the session down in 17th fastest, 2.788 seconds off the pace from Piquet's time.
Britain's Tom Blomqvist was the slowest driver of the session, finishing down in 20th place for Andretti Formula E, 3.884 seconds off the pace.
