Dani Pedrosa headed Honda stablemate Cal Crutchlow in the opening MotoGP practice for the second round of the 2018 season in Argentina.
Pedrosa's teammate Marc Marquez was the early pacesetter in the opening 45-minute session, the four-time Argentina pole winner going top with a 1:42.280s, before improving to a 1:41.778s despite a moment on the front end at Turn 13.
Crutchlow edged ahead just seconds later with a 1:41.542s, with the Briton's former LCR teammate Jack Miller deposing him with 30 minutes remaining by just 0.036 seconds on his Pramac GP17 Ducati.
With 15 minutes to go, Marquez returned himself to the top of the pile, with a succession of quick laps culminating in a 1:40.951s to go 0.250s clear of the field.
In the closing seconds, Pedrosa jumped up the order to take the lead with a 1:40.303s, which Crutchlow challenged on his final tour, but came up 0.042s short.
Suzuki's Andrea Iannone – who led the session briefly with his 1:40.386s – completed the top three ahead of Tech3 Yamaha's Johann Zarco and Miller, with Marquez sixth at the chequered flag.
Valentino Rossi was lead factory Yamaha rider in seveth, half a second from Pedrosa's best, while teammate Maverick Vinales was unable to improve on 13th after being caught out by a late lunge from Marquez at Turn 5.
Qatar race winner Andrea Dovizioso headed Ducati teammate Jorge Lorenzo in eighth, with Pramac's Danilo Petrucci – who recovered from a crash at the newly resurfaced Turn 13 in the atter stages – completing the top 10 on the third GP18.
Hafizh Syahrin was just 0.028s outside of the top 10 on the sister Tech3 bike, the Malaysian pipping Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro, Vinales, KTM's Bradley Smith and Scott Redding on the second RS-GP to round out a top 15 covered by just over a second.
