Reigning Moto3 world champion Joan Mir says he will go to MotoGP next year if he feels prepared enough regardless of how much success he has in his debut Moto2 campaign.
Mir dominated last year's lightweight class, winning 10 races on his way to the title with Leopard Honda and securing a multi-year deal with the Marc VDS team to step up to Moto2.
The Spaniard – who ended his Moto2 debut in Qatar 11th having started 24th – has been linked with a number of teams amid MotoGP's current 'silly season'.
Keen to find success in Moto2, Mir admits he would jump at the opportunity to fulfill his “dream” move to the premier class next year, though only if he feels he is capable.
“My dream is to one day join MotoGP and to fight with the best riders in the world in MotoGP,” Mir said in an interview with motogp.com.
“If you win in Moto2, for sure you go to MotoGP. I want to win in Moto2, but I also want to go to MotoGP.
“I think that if I have to decide I will go to MotoGP [instead of staying in Moto2 to win]. Depends about my feeling; if I'm feeling prepared, yes.
“But if I feel I'm not prepared, even if I have the contract I think that I will say no. I don't know when I will have the opportunity to go, but in my head is clear one day I want to be there.”
The Marc VDS team has won the Moto2 crown twice with Tito Rabat and Franco Morbidelli, both of whom graduated to MotoGP with team in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
Mir believes the Belgian squad's success in Moto2 and its progression system, which begins in the CEV Junior World Championship, makes it the best team to prepare a rider for MotoGP.
“It is clear, if you want to win you need a team that wants to give you the best material to win,” he added.
“This team is a two-time world champion with different riders, so I think is one of the best teams in Moto2.
“Also, the progression that they have from CEV to MotoGP is very interesting, and I think this team really prepares you for MotoGP, which is a really good thing.”
