Volkswagen to end F3 involvement after 2018

Volkswagen has confirmed that it will end its involvement in Formula 3 at the end of the year, ahead of the series’ overhaul for 2019.

It was confirmed last week that the Formula 1 Group will act as promoter to the newly-formed F3 International series, which is replacing GP3 and effectively succeeding the current European F3 category.

VW’s most recent stint in Formula 3 began in 2007 and its engines powered Signature’s Edoardo Mortara to the 2010 title and Carlin’s Lando Norris to last year’s crown.

VW will continue to maintain a motorsport presence, predominantly in tin-top circuit racing and on the rallying stage, but will not remain in Formula 3 heading into 2019.

“In Formula 3, Volkswagen can look back on a remarkable record,” said VW Motorsport Director Sven Smeets.

“For more than three decades, Volkswagen teams and drivers have enjoyed great success against teams from other manufacturers – we are sincerely grateful to them for this.

“We will continue to provide our customers with consistent support, in order to bring the 2018 season to a successful close in the European F3 Championship and at the F3 World Cup in Macau.”

Both Formula 2 and GP3 use a single-spec engine in their respective series, supplied by Mecachrome.
