The DTM series is looking to make an impact in 2018. The addition of Brands Hatch and Misano to the calendar were already big news, but the German championship's top brass seems to have one more surprise up their sleeve by making their Italian round a night double-header.
On the weekend between 25 and 26 August, the global motorsport calendar is already quite congested, with F1 racing at Spa-Francorchamps and MotoGP at Silverstone. In order to avoid a collision with these major events, DTM has decided to venture into unexplored territory.
Though plans for holding both weekend races under floodflights are firmly in place, no starting time has been set as of yet and negotiations with the series' domestic broadcasting partner SAT.1 are still ongoing.
However, it appears that drivers have already been filled in on the idea and are keen on the experience.
"I'm very happy with the calendar," said Mercedes driver Lucas Auer speaking to Motorsport-Magazin. "My personal highlights are the Norisring classic and our first race in Misano. I love Italy and I look forward to the atmosphere there, especially since it will be at night."
