Force India name change by Australia ’50/50′ – Otmar Szafnauer

Force India Chief Operating Officer Otmar Szafnauer says the team has yet to decide the name it will use in 2018, but has indicated that such a move is likely.

Force India lodged several new company names through 2017, and last week moved to deny speculation linking it with potential new investors.

The operation launched its new car, the VJM11, on Monday morning at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, though did so with no reference to its name on team clothing or the background hoardings. 

When asked about the current situation, Szafnauer said: "We haven't quite decided [the name] yet, and it also needs to go through the formal approval process, and we haven't done that yet.

"We'll see. There's a probability that it will change by the first race. Higher than 50-50. 51/49… It's like playing blackjack in Vegas, 50.5 and 49.5."

The Silverstone-based squad has finished fourth in the standings across the past two years – behind only Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull – but Szafnauer is wary accomplishing the feat this season will be trickier.

"Well it’s going to be hard for us this year to maintain where we were last year," he added. "I think some of the midfield competitors are getting stronger, adding more resources. 

"I don’t think it’s a secret that Renault has added loads of people, backing from their parents and they’ve got good facilities. 

"McLaren has changed powertrain now so they say they’re going to be better. 

"Williams has a Paddy Lowe car and I think they hired a chief aerodynamicist from Ferrari was it? 

"So I think they’re looking at getting stronger, they have the same powertrain as we do. 

"Bigger facilities, more resources, more financial capabilities from FOM as well so it’ll be hard to maintain fourth but that’s our target and we think we can do it."
