Jean-Eric Vergne claimed the season opening pole position for Techeetah in Hong Kong despite ending his lap with a bizarre finish line spin.
The Frenchman set a time of 1:03.568 which was good enough to see him start at the front for the first or two races this weekend, pipping Audi's Daniel Abt by two-tenths, with Sam Bird and Nick Heidfeld still to run – both failed to improve on that time though.
Bird came closest and will start second, finishing a mere 0.027s down to complete the front-row, whilst Heidfeld was just 0.002s off Bird in one of the closest qualifying sessions in Formula E's history.

Vergne faced losing pole however as his spin meant he exceeded the in-lap time limit of 120 per cent, but the stewards decided against action as he didn't impeed any of his rivals.
Felix Rosenqvist will start fifth thanks to a mistake at the hairpin which cost him a handful of time, a purple sector two couldn't make up the deficit. He starts ahead of defending champion Lucas di Grassi, who failed to make the Super Pole top six.
Oliver Turvey was seventh for NIO with Antonio Felix da Costa eighth for Andretti. Renault e.dams Sebastien Buemi was ninth and Jaguar's Nelson Piquet completed the top ten which was covered by less than half a second.
