Valtteri Bottas claimed a lights to flag victory in Abu Dhabi to round off a strong 2017 season for the Finnish driver in his maiden season with Mercedes.

Bottas held off team-mate Lewis Hamilton's advances which mostly came in the closing laps, although the pair were rarely split by more than a handful of seconds during the entire grand prix.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was third to claim his 99th career podium finish, but couldn't challenge the Mercedes cars which were in another league, finishing 19 seconds adrift.

It was a fairly processional race, although some midfield passes shook up the starting order a little.

Daniel Ricciardo was the first retirement from the race as a hydraulic issue struck his RB13, promoting Kimi Raikkonen and Max Verstappen to fourth and fifth, whilst Renault's Nico Hulkenberg did all he needed to secure the team sixth in the standings, pushing Toro Rosso down to seventh.

The German had to do it with the addition of a five-second time penalty after he was deemed to have passed Sergio Perez off the circuit and despite the Mexican's cries to have the position handed back, the stewards handed out the time penalty instead.

Force India's Perez and Esteban Ocon were seventh and eighth with McLaren's Fernando Alonso ninth and Felipe Massa completing the points positions in tenth – both celebrating lasts, with Alonso happy to see McLaren splitting from Honda and Massa retiring from the sport (again).
