René Binder will compete for Rapax in this weekend’s standalone Formula 2 round at the Circuito de Jerez.
Binder started 72 races in GP2, which was rebranded as Formula 2 for this year, most recently at last season’s Hockenheim round, and took a best finish of sixth in the 2013 Monaco Sprint Race.
Binder switched full-time to Formula V8 3.5 in 2016 and holds fifth position in this year’s standings, having taken three victories.
The Austrian has been drafted in to race the No. 19 car for Rapax at the Spanish venue, replacing former Formula 1 driver Roberto Merhi.
GP2 veterans Johnny Cecotto Jr. and Sergio Canamasas previously raced the car earlier this season.
Binder will link up with Louis Delétraz at Rapax, the Swiss youngster having made a mid-season move from Racing Engineering.
Rapax holds fifth position in this year's Teams' championship.
