Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen led a 1-2 during the final practice session for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Räikkönen clocked a time of 1:31.880 to finish 0.162s clear of team-mate Sebastian Vettel, as neither managed to improve on their Friday efforts.

Vettel encountered trouble during the closing stages as he slowly returned to the pits, using only second gear.

Daniel Ricciardo was third for Red Bull, while Mercedes split its approach after struggling throughout the opening two sessions.

Valtteri Bottas ran with the upgrades and placed fourth, while Lewis Hamilton used the old-spec set-up and led the way mid-session, before being shuffled down to fifth as rivals improved.

Max Verstappen was sixth for Red Bull and was involved in a bizarre collision with Renault’s Jolyon Palmer during the closing stages.

Verstappen, preparing for a hot lap, was hit by Palmer – who was on a timed effort – on the entry to the hairpin, giving the spinning Red Bull driver a puncture and leaving the Renault racer without half his front wing.

Force India’s Sergio Pérez headed a gaggle of midfield drivers in seventh spot, ahead of Felipe Massa, Esteban Ocon, Stoffel Vandoorne and Fernando Alonso, who had a spin through the final hairpin.

Lance Stroll was 12th, as Kevin Magnussen recovered from a mid-session technical problem to claim 13th, leaving Nico Hülkenberg 14th, ahead of Toro Rosso pair Carlos Sainz Jr. and Pierre Gasly.

The aforementioned Palmer was 17th, with Romain Grosjean spinning under braking for Turn 14 as he guided his rebuilt Haas to 18th spot.

Sauber duo Marcus Ericsson, via a brush with the polystyrene board at pit exit, and Pascal Wehrlein again finished at the rear of the pack.
