Abt Audi Sport driver and newly-crowned 2016/2017 Formula E champion Lucas di Grassi says he is “extremely satisfied” with the title win after his “toughest” season yet.
The Brazilian driver was a title threat in season one, only to finish third overall, before he put up another challenge in season two.
After an intense battle with Sebastien Buemi, he missed out at the final hurdle, but on Sunday in Montreal seventh place was enough for di Grassi to take the crown at his third attempt.
The former F1 driver entered the weekend as the underdog, but a win in the first ePrix on Saturday and Buemi’s disqualification moved him 10 points clear.
A disastrous first few laps of the second ePrix for Buemi put him out of contention and though he recovered to P11, di Grassi had done enough to take the championship.
“This journey started three years ago, when we started season one – we got a lot of good results, arrived in London fighting for the championship, even though I was disqualified from winning a race.
“Season two, it was the same situation. Again, I got disqualified from winning a race and now, finally, I came here as an underdog, 10 points behind and I had the nerves to keep it calm and did the job.
“On Sunday, I managed to bring it home. I am so happy for the team, so happy for the Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport guys, they really deserve it.
“This season was our toughest I would say. I had to do one race with a broken fibula, I really had luck on my side in some races, Hong Kong and Mexico for example.
“So, I guess this was our year and it is extremely satisfying.”
