Jolyon Palmer believes his Renault R.S.17 “didn’t feel right” during the second practice session, as he compounded a miserable Friday by crashing out at the Hungaroring.
Palmer finished 10th during the first session, behind team-mate Nico Hülkenberg, but ran wide exiting Turn 4 in the closing stages, causing substantial damage to his front wing.
Palmer missed the opening segment of the second session but returned to the circuit, only to struggle for pace before losing control on the approach to the final corner.
The Briton, yet to score a point in Formula 1 this season, spun backwards into the barrier, causing substantial damage to the left-rear of his Renault.
“It wasn’t the end to the day that anyone wanted, however FP1 looked good,” Palmer said.
“Starting the weekend in the top 10 was positive, even if I suffered from a damaged front wing and floor after running wide and feeling the consequences of the new kerbs.
“My car didn’t feel right from the start of FP2, and this contributed to me putting it in the wall.
“Looking to tomorrow, we’re going to go over the set-up with a fine tooth comb as we know there’s definitely good potential.”
