Haas F1 development driver Santino Ferrucci will switch to Formula 2 with the Trident team for the remainder of the 2017 season.
After finishing 12th in the GP3 standings with DAMS in 2016, the American decided to stick with the team and series for this season.
However, after three GP3 rounds, he has now moved up to F2 from the Hungaroring round onwards, joining regular driver Nabil Jeffri.
Sergio Canamasas, Raffaele Marciello and Callum Ilott have all made appearances racing the No.17 car for Trident so far this season.
However, the seat has now been locked down for the remainder of the year. Ferrucci tested for Trident at last year’s post-season GP3 test.
He has been part of Haas F1’s squad since last year, completing simulator work and attending tests and races, alongside completing two days of in-season test running at Silverstone.
“We are really proud to announce the agreement reached between Trident and Santino Ferrucci for the final five rounds of the FIA Formula 2 season,” said Giacomo Ricci, team manager.
“The 19-year-old already had the chance to test one of our GP3 cars in last November’s collective post-season test at Abu Dhabi.
“Back then, he impressed the team’s staff, bringing home great results and keeping his name among the top-five at all times.
“He is now set to make his Formula 2 debut at Budapest, on the same track where he led the way in GP3 testing. I am sure that Santino has all the skills needed to adapt to a Formula 2 car very quickly.”
