Lucas di Grassi ‘satisfied’ to make up ground in New York

Abt Audi Sport driver and Formula E title contender Lucas di Grassi says he was “satisfied” to make up ground in the championship fight and not let the New York ePrix weekend go to waste.

The Brazilian driver was presented with a unique opportunity to claw back points on run-away leader Sebastien Buemi, with the Renault e.dams driver absent in Brooklyn.

With Buemi in Germany competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship, di Grassi cut the gap in the standings to just 10 points with fourth and fifth in the two New York races.

He struggled more in qualifying and was unable to secure a podium, but still picked up useful points ahead of the double-header finale in Montreal.

“We have to analyse the data and make sure that we are in a better position again for the finale in Montreal,” he said.

“We weren’t fast enough in New York to be able to win. With a little more luck it could have been two podiums, but not more.

“We did what we could and under the circumstances I’m very satisfied with the results. After all I made up 22 points.

“It wasn’t a wasted weekend. We are still in the thick of the title battle and will try to make the best of the situation.”

On his title chances in Canada, he added: “It’ll be difficult, but we’ll try everything.

“It is psychologically important that I can win through my own efforts in Montreal: if I win both races I’m champion. Then there’s no need to worry about the mathematical chances. This is exactly what we’ll try to do.”
