Sam Bird takes Brooklyn clean sweep with race two win

DS Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird ruled supreme on the Brooklyn Street Circuit to make it a clean-sweep of wins in New York.

Having won Saturday’s race in controlled style, Bird went one further with a dominant display in Sunday’s second race, having taken pole position earlier in the day.

Mahindra’s Felix Rosenqvist started alongside him on the front row and got the better start, taking the lead with the inside line into the first corner.

Despite opening up a small lead in the early laps, Bird kept Rosenqvist close and was right behind him when the full course yellow came out on lap nine for Mitch Evans’ stopped car.

He made his move shortly after the restart at Turn 6, in a brave dive up the inside of Rosenqvist. However, another full course yellow looked set to cost him the lead.

His team-mate Alex Lynn stopped on the track just before the half-way mark, which prompted several drivers to change cars under FCY. DS Virgin, however, kept Bird out.

The Briton dived into the pits on the next lap, just coming out before the green flag running resumed, just emerging ahead of Rosenqvist.

Through the final stint, Bird was able to finish over 11 seconds clear to claim his second victory of the season and the weekend.

Rosenqvist and fellow Mahindra racer Nick Heidfeld swapped places late on, only for Heidfeld to give second place back to his team-mate (and distant title-contender) with two laps to go.

So, it was Rosenqvist claiming second, while Heidfeld had to fend off Renault e.dams Pierre Gasly into the final corner. Gasly, replacing Sebastien Buemi, ended up in the wall.

However, the Frenchman still limped across the line in fourth, with title challenger Lucas di Grassi a slightly distant fifth after making up ground in the opening stint – now 10 points behind Buemi.

Nicolas Prost also had a lonely final part of the race in sixth, ahead of Tom Dillmann and Jean-Eric Vergne – who dropped from third to last early on after pitting to repair damage.

Techeetah then left Vergne and team-mate Stephane Sarrazin out in the second FCY and swapped cars under green flag conditions, costing them time.

Robin Frijns was ninth, after an intense midfield scrap that included numerous clashes and plenty of frantic battles, while Jerome d’Ambrosio completed the top 10.
