Fernando Alonso’s grid penalty for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is now up to 40 places after McLaren-Honda elected to fit new components to his MCL32 overnight.
Alonso, already carrying a 15-place drop, has had 25 positions added to his sanction for this weekend’s race at the Baku City Circuit.
Honda confirmed that a seventh MGU-H and Turbocharger have been fitted to his car; as it is the first time a seventh version of any element has been used, this carries a 10-place drop, with the other element carrying a five-place demotion.
A fifth Internal Combustion Engine and fifth MGU-K have also been installed, with each of these carrying a five-place grid penalty.
Alonso is therefore set to start from the back of the grid, alongside team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne.
