Fernando Alonso believes the lack of top speed coming from the Honda engine in the back of his McLaren car is potentially dangerous, as the closing speeds down Canada's long straight meant he and team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne were powerless to stop rivals flying past.
Alonso was 16mph down on the cars around him which made holding his position almost impossible, but it was what could happen if a rival driver failed to move around the McLaren in time, underestimating the closing speeds, that Alonso says is dangerous.
"The race itself was already hard enough given the lack of power," said Alonso. "They were passing us in the middle of the straights and sometimes it was even dangerous with such a speed difference."
Alonso had been running tenth before yet another engine failure forced him out of the race with just two laps remaining, which will likely mean another new engine at the next race in Azerbaijan.
"It is not only that we lost a point today and we lost another race, we will start last in Baku because Jenson [Button] changed the power unit in Monaco and started last," he added
"Here we lost a power unit and in Baku we will start last again. The situation is definitely not nice."
Alonso was seen running up the steps into a fan grandstand after he pulled off circuit, which he says was to "give something back" to his loyal fans.
"I hoped to give the gloves to the guys there but the grandstand was too far away so I thought it will not get there if I throw the gloves.
"So I thought I'd go up and throw the gloves, but once I was there I nearly couldn't leave. We have so much support from the fans here every time we come to Canada so I felt I should give something back."
