Abt Audi Sport’s Lucas di Grassi scored his second career pole position in qualifying for the Berlin ePrix’s first race, beating José María López by 0.001 seconds.
Following recent qualifying struggles, di Grassi made it through to Super Pole and stormed to first place in the final session with a 1:08.312.
It edged him slightly closer to title rival and championship leader Sébastien Buemi, who only qualified in 14th place.
Lopez just missed out on the top spot in qualifying by one-thousandth of a second, having to settle for second, with Mahindra’s Felix Rosenqvist setting the pace in the group stage and finishing third.
Mahindra locked out the second row of the grid, with practice two pacesetter Nick Heidfeld fourth. Sam Bird made a mistake on his sole Super Pole lap and was fifth.
Techeetah’s Jean-Éric Vergne failed to progress to Super Pole and was best of the rest in sixth, ahead of NextEV NIO’s Oliver Turvey.
Daniel Abt was eighth quickest, with Nicolas Prost the lead Renault e.dams driver in ninth. Jérôme d'Ambrosio was 10th in qualifying for Faraday Future Dragon Racing.
Maro Engel, new Techeetah recruit Stephane Sarrazin and Nelson Piquet Jr all qualified just ahead of title leader Buemi, while Sarrazin’s Venturi replacement Tom Dillmann was 15th.
A tap with the wall on his 200kW lap put Mitch Evans 16th. Robin Frijns and António Félix da Costa struggled for Andretti in 17th and 20th, separated by Adam Carroll and Loic Duval.
