Scott Dixon on top after delayed opening practice at Texas

Scott Dixon has ended the opening practice session ahead of the Rainguard Water Sealers 600 around the Texas Motor Speedway fastest, after a delayed start to proceedings due to a rain delay.

The start of the first practice session endured a significant delay after heavy rain struck the oval, forcing drivers to wait for the inclement weather to pass and the track to dry out before beginning their weekend.

Once the track had dried out the 22 drivers were naturally keen to begin preparing for the qualifying session later in the day, with many drivers immediately taking to the track once the green flag was out.

Charlie Kimball was second for Chip Ganassi Racing, after a competitive start to the weekend which saw him even going momentarily fastest towards the end of the session.

Alexander Rossi was P3 for Andretti Herta Autosport, with the 2016 Indianapolis 500 champion also sharing the top spot throughout the session.

Graham Rahal and Marco Andretti were fourth and fifth respectively, after a session which was interrupted by two caution periods, both for track inspections.

Reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Takuma Sato was P6 for Andretti Autosport, as Honda once again showed their renewed supremacy over Chevrolet with the top six positions all occupied by Honda-powered drivers.

Ed Carpenter was the fastest Chevrolet-powered driver in P7, as the team owner returns to the cockpit for the first time since the Indianapolis 500, replacing Spencer Pigot.

Will Power could only manage eighth for Penske, as the outfit struggled to trouble the sharp end of the order.

Tony Kanaan and Josef Newgarden rounded out the top ten, with only three Chevrolet-powered drivers managing to break into the top ten.

Further down the order Penske team-mates Simon Pagenaud and Helio Castroneves could only manage P12 and P13 respectively.

Tristan Vautier was P16 for Dale Coyne Racing, as the Frenchman prepares to start his first IndyCar race since 2015 in place of the injured Sebastien Bourdais.

Meanwhile Gabby Chaves could only manage P21 for rookie outfit Harding Racing, who are preparing for their second IndyCar race after making their debut at the Indianapolis 500 earlier in the year.
