Top F1 teams deserve more prize money – Gene Haas

Haas F1 Team owner Gene Haas believes the top teams in Formula 1 are entitled to more prize money than the smaller outfits, even if it means a team such as his own receives less than it otherwise would.

The current prize money system is heavily weighted toward F1's older teams, with outfits like Ferrari, McLaren and Williams receiving a massive cash bonus on top of their prize money thanks to their 'historical' status.

The remaining money is then distributed based on their Constructors' Standing, with the bottom-placed team receiving a tiny fraction of what the championship-winning team earns.

Although Haas isn't against the system being tweaked in order to make it fairier, he believes a teams history and its success should count for something when it comes to how the prize fund is distributed.

"I think we just have to be very very careful in how you redistribute the wealth because there are some teams at the top that have spent 50 years doing this, that have earned some entitlement to how the costs are distributed," he said in Monaco.

"I'm not saying that the teams at the bottom don't deserve more, but I'm still saying teams at the top deserve more.

"You can't just arbitrarily redistribute that because, quite frankly, winning races should come with rewards, and it should not be a socialistic-type structure."

However Haas knows the teams will have little say in the matter, with new owners Liberty Media holding the power.

"Unfortunately the teams don't have a real strong position there to speak up about how it will get distributed, because we don't own Formula 1."
